Brief Profile

The Cocopah, known as "River People", are a Native American Indian Tribe (see Cocopa Indian Tribe website) who have lived along the lower Colorado River and delta for centuries, maintaining their traditional and cultural beliefs throughout many political and environmental changes. Presently the majority reside on the Cocopa Indian Reservation, southwest of Yuma County, Arizona.

As a whole, the Cocopa people straddle the border between the United States and Mexico. In the United States near the city of Yuma, Arizona, the reservation is three noncontiguous bodies of land.

The Cocopa language is one among several languages that traditionally was spoken along the Colorado delta river. It also was not written but was passed down orally. In an effort to keep the language alive, the Cocopa people offer language classes.

The majority of Cocopa adhere to traditional indigenous beliefs.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for the Cocopa to come to a saving knowledge of their Creator.
  • Pray for Cocopa believers to be bold in their witness and to have a good testimony among their tribe and to surrounding native peoples.
