Brief Profile

The Coeur d'Alene people reside in northwest Idaho on border of Washington. Historically, they resided in permanent villages on the shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Lake Pend Orielle and Hayden Lake. Today they reside on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation in several different cities.

In their language, they call themselves Schitsu'umsh (or Skitswish), meaning The Discovered People or Those Who Are Found Here. Although English is widely spoken, the tribe is encouraging vitalization of their tribal tongue. The tribe provides language resources and promotes language workshops, discussion groups, language fairs, etc.

Cultural traditions include a respect and reverence for natural law, and for responsible environmental stewardship. This tradition influences the tribe still as it is active in the protection, conservation and enhancement of fish and wildlife resources; as well as conservation issues that impact tribal resources.

For more information, see The Coeur D'Alene Tribe webpage.
