Brief Profile

The Comanche people, also known as the Numunu or "Lords of the Plains", traditionally resided the Northern Plains areas of their Shoshone relatives, all the way south past the Rio Grande into present-day Mexico. They lived a life of following the buffalo upon horseback. Today, the Comanche predominantly reside in southwest Oklahoma, along with Apache Kiowa people.

They are known for serving as Code Talkers in World War II, using their language in the Allied invasion of Normandy against the Nazis. Hence, their language is considered one of the complex languages in the world. Their language is related to the language of the Shoshoni people, yet the two are not mutually intelligible with one another.

Christian presence and Christian missionaries have a long history among the Comanche people. Sometimes evangelizing the Comanche appeared more similar to conversion of western cultural forms and traditions.

With the above in mind, Comanche belong to many Christian denominations: to name a few, Methodist-Episcopal, Pentecostals, Baptist, etc.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that evangelical Comanche will share the message of Christ with other unreached Native American peoples.
  • Pray for revival to take place among Comanche Christians.
