Brief Profile

The Coos, or Hanis, people are a Native American people who reside predominantly in Coos County, Oregon. The word "coos" is thought to mean "lagoon", "lake", or "place of pines". Although no place is named Hanis, Coos is used as the name of a county and for a town, Coos Bay.

Today the Coos language is dormant. As such, they speak English. However, the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw has a language program to revitalize the language. Moreover, as a people, they seek to preserve their unique cultural identity, culture traditions, and religious and historical beliefs. For more information, see the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians website.

The majority of Coos claim Christianity as their religion. They often belong to Protestant congregations. Nevertheless, secular lifestyles have influenced many so that they are in essence "in name only" Christians and do not necessarily live a Christian lifestyle in deed and word.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that evangelical Coos will share their faith in Christ both in word and deed.
  • Pray that Coos will live a lifestyle that exemplifies a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
