Brief Profile

The majority of Eritreans came to North America as refugees during civil war in the African country known as Eritrea. The density map to the right only counts foreign born, 1st generation, Eritreans.

Eritreans speak Tigre, a language better known in Eritrea by its autonym Tigrayit, and also known by speakers in Sudan as Xasa.

Several Eritrean associations exist in the United States: Eritrean American Community in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, Eritrean Community Center of Greater New York, Eritrean American Community in Dallas, Eritrean Community Association in Chicago, Eritrean Association in Greater Seattle, and Eritrean American Community in Sacramento.

Eritreans also run many businesses and restaurants. Additionally, Eritreans have opened a number of garages and auto repair shops. In addition, they run several taxi establishments (e.g. the Eritrean Cap Company of San Diego).

A large majority of Eritreans adhere to Sunni Islam. The Eritrean Muslims Association in North America (EMANA) and Eritrean Muslims Council (EMC) serve the Eritrean community's Muslim adherents. A small minority of Eritreans are Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant.

Prayer Points

  • Pray Christians will respond to God's call and intentionally engage Eritreans in word and deed sharing the message of Christ and planting churches.
  • Pray God will work in the hearts and minds of Eritreans to breakdown spiritual strongholds and remove socio-cultural barriers.
