Brief Profile

The Flemish are a Germanic group from north Belgium who are one of two principal groups in Belgium, the other being the French-speaking Walloons from south Belgium. However, the Flemish make up the majority of the Belgium population.

The Flemish form a clearly distinguishable people group, set apart by their language and customs. They speak Vlaams, a most closely related to Dutch and generally regarded as the Belgian variant of Dutch.

Culturally, visiting the home of a Flemish is usually an evening affair. In fact, one may not be invited to attend until 8pm. They are known for their chocolate, beer, frites (French fries) and witloof (a widely cultivated herb with leaves valued as salad green; also known as endive having leaves with irregular frilled edges).

The majority of Flemish people are by baptism assumed Roman Catholic, though a diminishing minority attend Mass on a regular basis and nearly almost all are agnostic or atheist.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that evangelicals will intentionally engage the Flemish people with a gospel presentation that shares the truth of a Creator God.
  • Pray that God will work through dreams and other circumstances to reveal the need to know the Creator God.
