Brief Profile

Apache is the collective name for several tribes related groups of Native Americans in the United States. These indigenous peoples of North America speak a Southern Athabaskan (Apachean) language, and are related linguistically to the Athabaskan speakers of Alaska and western Canada.

The Apache, Jicarilla people are one among five Apache people groups in the United States currently residing in northern New Mexico near the Colorado border. Linguistically related to Athapascan tribes in western Canada and Alaska, the Spaniards first named the Jicarilla people because of their expertness in making vessels of basketry.

The Apache, Jicarilla land has been a long disputed territory due to its rich resources. Culturally, they are organized into matrilineal clans. The Jicarilla Apache Nation is world-renowned for hunting, fishing, camping, boating and hiking opportunities.
