Brief Profile

The Fouta Tooro are a Fulbe people who originated from several places in central and west Africa, including Senegal. Traditionally, they were named the Pulaar, which is the name of their language.

Historically, they were semi-nomadic and many settled in the state of Fouta Tooro. The area became a multiethnic, multilingual society, ruled by Muslim Fulbe and backed by powerful free and slave armies. The Fulbe of the Futa Jalon (Fulbe Futa) and Fouta Tooro states were able to take advantage of the growing slave trade with the Europeans on the coast, particularly the French and Portuguese.

They speak Pulaar, and place importance on narratives and proverbs that transmit valuable life lessons.

Almost all Fouta Tooro in the United States adhere to Islam, integrating animistic practices into their Muslim religious duties.
