Brief Profile

The Gabonese people are a collection of various people groups from the country of Gabon who speak the official language of Gabon, French. Gabon is home to over 40 distinct people groups, with over 50% of the total population encompassing the Fang people, who speak Fang.

Gabonese are a very spiritual people. In fact, their traditions are mostly centered araound worship and the afterlife. Art for the sake of art was a foreign concept to African culture until the arrival of the Westerners. Before colonization, the Gabonese considered music, instruments, masks, sculptures, and tribal dances as rites and acts of worship.

Gabon is known for its masks that are used for special occasions. For instance, the majority Fang people host the n'goltang (Fang). Every people group hosts it own specific mask. The masks are used most often for marriages, funerals and births. They are made with local wood.

Gabonese predominantly adhere to Roman Catholicism.
