Brief Profile

Guyanese are immigrants from the multi-ethnic South American country of Guyana on the Caribbean coast. Their primary languages are Guyanese Creole and English. North America has the highest number of Guyanese people outside of Guyana. A significant portion of Guyanese have settled in the Northeast of the USA. The Guyanese-American community mostly consists of people of Afro-Guyanese and Indo-Guyanese origins, although there are some of mixed heritage, as well as some indigenous peoples.

Many Guyanese have started shops, traditional Guyanese restaurants, grocery stores, and jewelry stores in the USA. Many Indo - Guyanese Americans work to maintain their cultural ties with both Guyana and India through wearing traditional Indian clothing and watching dubbed Bollywood videos. The Guyanese American community has close ties with Guyana and tends to remit money to help their families in their home country.

A weekly newspaper, The Journal of the Caribbean, is distributed throughout North America and with news from Guyana. Most Guyanese practice either Protestant Christianity or Roman Catholicism, although there are a significant number of Hindus as well.
