Brief Profile

The Igbo, historically spelled "Ibo", are a people group of southeastern Nigeria who speak Igbo. The language is actually several languages and dialects. They are one largest people groups in Africa.

Igbo traditional religion is based on the belief that there is one creator, God, also called Chineke or Chukwu. The creator can be approached through numerous other deities and spirits in the form of natural objects, most commonly through the god of thunder (Amadioha). Traditionally, ancestors were venerated. Shrines and other sacred places became the advocate between the secular and sacred.

Among Igbo in the United States, Christianity has taken a more dominant role among the Igbo. An equal split between adhering to Roman Catholicism or Protestantism exists.

Most people are very disciplined to attend church services and it is hard for them to believe in the existence of ‘free thinkers’, i.e. people who do not feel committed to any religion.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that Igbo Christians will obey the "Great Commission" and make disciples of all nations.
  • Pray that the comforts of living in North America will not tempt Igbo from loosing their zeal for the Christ.
