Arab, Algerians have a long history of migration and residence in North America. However, it was not until 1998 that this population to beganrapidly to grow. It was also during this time that there was a surge of work visas given to Algerians. Because of this there were a large number who moved to Chicago seeking work. Most Algerians are highly educated and have professional experience. Many are employed as physicians and engineers, while others have become small business owners.

Arab, Algerians have a strong sense of community and because of this there is almost always an Algerian Association where there is a population of Arab, Algerians. These associations organize community events and attempt to create an environment where the Arab, Algerian culture can be preserved and pushed forward in the younger generations.

Almost all Arab Algerians adhere to Islam.

These associations are also put into place as a safe haven for those Algerians who have just arrived in the country and are trying to settle down and learn to live in North America.

Islam is the dominant religion of Arab, Algerians. Upon arriving many are very devout in their beliefs and resist assimilation strongly, but as their children grow up they learn English and American culture and their Islamic commitment sometimes becomes "in name only." Most women stop wearing the hijab, and there is no segregation of men and women during events. Although this commitment to Islam dissipates the people still hold to the cultural holidays and traditions of their past. Ramadan is still the most major holiday of Arab, Algerians.
