Brief Profile

The Jemez are a federally recognized Native American people who predominantly reside on the Jemez Pueblo approximately 55 miles northwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over fifty percent of all tribal members reside near or in Jemez Pueblo.

The Jemez value their ancestral traditions yet also live in modern society. Traditional dances are still held throughout the year at Jemez, many of which are not open to the public. The public is welcome to share in certain events, particularly the "Nuestra Senora de Los Angelas Feast Day de Los Persingula", August 2nd (Pecos Feast of St. Persingula), the "San Diego Feast Day" on November 12th. Additional events open to the public occur at various times throughout the Christmas Holidays.

Jemez historical encounter with Christianity first came from the Spanish who forced them to convert. As a result, although Jemez may claim Roman Catholicism as their religious preference, they still believe and practice their traditional tribal religion. The Pueblo is home to the San Diego Indian Mission. Evangelical Christians makeup a small percentage of the people.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that Christians will translate contextualized Gospel presentations into the Jemez language.
  • Pray that God will open doors of access to the Jemez residing in the Pueblo.
