Brief Profile

The Kaliko people, also known as Keliko, are an ethnic group originally from Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and Sudan. Kaliko is a tribal area and is located in Central Equatoria State, South Sudan.

The worldwide population of the Kaliko surpasses over 22,000. Like several other Sudanic peoples, the Kaliko immigrated to the United States due to civil war in the area.

They speak the Keliko language, which is a Nilo-Saharan language.

Due to their small population many younger generation are beginning outwardly to assimilate into the broader Afro-American culture. Moreover, their values often contradict the traditional Kaliko values. However, their Kaliko identity is often seen when they are in their home.

The majority of Kaliko are Sunni Muslims.

Please note: The Sudanese people group cluster, numbering over 100,000, includes the Acholi, Anuak, Azande, Bari, Central Dinka, Jur Modo, Kaliko, Mabaan, Madi, Moru, Nuer, Shilluk, plus several other minority people groups. They are socially, culturally, linguistically, and religiously diverse with each having their own unique people group identity.
