Brief Profile

The Koasati, also known as the Coushatta, are a federally recognized Native American people group now living primarily in the U.S. states of Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. Now, they reside on the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas in Polk County near Livingston, Texas and the Alabama-Quassarte Tribal Town headquartered in Wetumka, Oklahoma. They also belong to the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana headquartered in Elton, Louisiana.

They speak the Koasati language, which is closely related and mutually intelligible with the language of the Alabama people. In fact, both the Alabama and Koasati migrated during the same period having intermarried. Only a few Koasati in Louisiana still speak the language.

The Coushatta family remains the cornerstone of Coushatta life. Past and present, the Coushatta proudly boast of a culture rich in courage, ingenuity and perseverance. They host an annual Coushatta Pow Wow.

Prayer Points

  • Ask God to work through dreams and vision to reveal to the Koasati people the message of hope through Jesus Christ.
  • Pray that the evangelical Koasati Christians will boldly share through word and deed their personal relationship with Jesus Christ and how Christ has changed their lives.
