Brief Profile

The Miwok (also known as the Miwuk, Mi-Wuk, or Me-Wuk), which in their mother tongue means the people, are a Native American people who reside in northern California. Historically, they consisted of four linguistically related groups:

  • Plains and Sierra Miwok: from tads western slope and foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the Sacramento Valley, San Joaquin Valley and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
  • Coast Miwok : from present day location of Marin County and southern Sonoma County. (This includes the Bodega Bay Miwok and Marin Miwok).
  • Lake Miwok: from Clear Lake basin of Lake County.
  • Bay Miwok: from present-day location of Contra Costa County.

Today 11 federally recognized tribes and 7 non-federally recognized tribes claim Miwok heritage consisting of 3,500 people in combination with other ethnic groups. However, the federal government only recognizes 230 people as being of Miwok descent, residing northeast of Modesta, California.
