Brief Profile

During Civil War 1980s, Arab, Sudanese began fleeing to refugee camps in neighboring countries. Originating fron North Sudan, they fled oppressive Muslim fundamentalists. Since 2000, they began resettling to other countries, primarily to the United States. Sudanese refugees in these camps have been accepted in North America. Initially, many were settled in places such as Maine.

Arab, Sudanese primarily from North Sudan and speak a form of dialect of Arabic called Sudanese Arabic. They follow the Sunni sect of Islam and are very committed to their faith in areas of the five pillars of Islam but are less committed when it comes to drinking and gambling. Islam in Sudan has been greatly influenced by the animism that is very prevelant in most of Africa. There are many mystical sides to the practice of Islam among Arab, Sudanese.
