Brief Profile

The Ugandan diaspora speak one of the major languages (Luganda, sometimes referred to as Ganda) in Uganda. Luganda is spoken by more than five million Baganda and other people principally in central Uganda.

Because of the great love for the culture and traditions of their ancestors, as well as a desire to contribute to the development of Uganda their motherland, many Ugandan diaspora have organized themselves in various groupings to pursue goals that will benefit their motherland. For instance, Stockholm, Sweden is home to the Ebika by'Abaganda mu Sweden, that is dedicated to promoting Buganda's culture.

The father is revered and obeyed as head of the family. His decisions are generally unquestioned. A man's social status is determined by those with whom he establishes patron/client relationships, and one of the best means of securing this relationship is through one's children.

A majority of Ugandan diaspora claim adherence to Roman Catholicism plus a smaller minority being evangelical Christians. Fewer percentages practice either traditional beliefs or Islam.
