Brief Profile

The majority of Bahamians reside in the state of Florida. Early Bahamian migrations began in the Florida Keys to salvage ship wrecks, fish, catch turtles and log tropical hardwood trees.

The majority of Bahamians live in and around Miami, Florida, with the Bahamian community centered in Coconut Grove. A growing Bahamian population exists in the Atlanta and the New York City area, with the population particularly centered in Harlem. In New York they regularly provide cultural education and entertainment, particularly due to the Office of the Bahamas Consulate General in New York being located in the city.

Bahamians adhere to their cultural heritage. They listen to and perform Junkanoo and rake-and-scrape music, engage in the classic art of West Indian storytelling, and create Bahamian-style art, especially straw weaving and canvas art. They enjoy eating conch, peas and rice, Johnny cake, and desserts.

They can often be heard speaking their unique English Creole language, especially in Florida.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that evangelical Bahamians will take the gospel cross-culturally to unreached people groups.
  • Ask God to reveal to the Bahamians the need for a personal living relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Pray for Bahamians who have been seduced by a secular way of life.
