Brief Profile

The Southern Luri (also known as Lor, Lori, Lori-ye Jonubi, Lur, or Ruliy Luri) originated from Iran with the majority coming from southwest Iran.

They speak Southern Luri. The existence of Southern Luri as a distinct language group has until recently been unknown to Western scholarship.

Southern Luri traditional dance is an integral section of their culture and probably grew in close association with traditional music. Dances include both circle dance and dance double and like Kurdish dance it is mixed-gender that distinguishes them from several other Muslim peoples. Women have much greater freedom than women in other groups from the homeland.

Southern Luri are predominantly Shia Muslims. However, traditionally they believed that shrines dedicated to "holy men" possess healing powers. Consequently, they visit these shrines once a year.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that the Lord will bring about a new hunger for spiritual truth among the Southern Luri.
  • Pray that the shortcomings of Islam will become obvious to them, and that a large number will embrace the Lord.
  • Pray that soon they will have access to gospel recordings in their mother tongue that will point them to the Good Shepherd.
