Brief Profile

Previously known as the Ntlakyapamuk (also spelled Nlaka'pamuk) Thompson, the Nlakapamuk are an indigenous First Nations people who speak an interior Salish language in southern British Columbia.

They speak the Thompson language which is spoken in the Fraser Canyon, Thompson Canyon, Nicola Country of the Canadian province of British Columbia.

Historically, they subsisted mainly by fishing and hunting, together with the gathering of wild roots and berries. They lived in circular, earth-covered pithouses. To their north were the Lillooet and Shuswap; to their south were the Okanagan.

They were known as Knife Indians by the employees of the Hudson's Bay Company and Thompson River Indians by the white traders.

The Nlaka'pamux were the object of both Anglican and Roman Catholic missionary efforts in the nineteenth century, resulting in the vast majority belonging to one of the two denominations.
