Brief Profile

The Dogrib people, sometimes spelled Tlicho, are a Dene First Nations people of the Athabaskan-speaking ethnolinguistic group living in the Northwest Territories, Canada.

They reside in six settlements: (1) Behchoko (formerly Rae-Edzo), (2) Whatì (Lac la Martre), (3) Gamèti (Rae Lakes), (4) Wekweeti (Snare Lake), (5) Dettah, and (6) N'Dilo (Rainbow Valley). In 1995, the Tlicho began negotiating a separate land claim whih also included a self-government agreement. The Tlicho Land Claim and Self Government Act received Royal Assent on February 10, 2005 and since that time they established a working governance structure.

The Roman Catholic faith reached the Dogribs in the 1850s and 1860s. Those who followed the Roman Catholic faith often came to local trading posts and missions to celebrate Christmas and Easter. Today the majority of Dogrib adhere to Roman Catholicism often mixed with elements of their ethnic religion.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that Christians will intentionally seek out Dogrib people, become their friends, and share their life in both word and deed.
  • Pray God will break through strongholds that prevent Dogrib from understanding that salvation comes through God's free grace.
