Brief Profile

The Bunong, also referred to as the Phnong, of Cambodia migrated to North America. They are one of several hill tribe groups that inhabit the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam border in their traditional forest homeland of eastern Cambodia.

In 1969-1970 Mondulkiri province, their traditional homeland, in Cambodia, fell under the Khmer Rouge control and as a consequence the Burong became a displaced people working for the Khmer Rouge in rice fields. Then in the 1980s as they were allowed to return to the traditional homeland some migrated to North America.

American Bunong are a tight-knit community. They have started an association with active programs to preserve their cultural identity. For more information, see Bunong Indigenous Community Association.
