Brief Profile

The Nisqually, also known as the Puget Salish or Southern Coast Salish, are a Native American people group who reside east of Olympia, Washington. They are one among several tribes who traditonally were a part of the Lushootshed language group.

The Nisqually reservation is home to a Casino, Market, Library, Youth Community Center, Day Care Center, and the Tribal Center. Living conditions vary among Nisqually people with some living in impoverished conditions and others not.

They are influenced by the Indian Shaker Church, a unique blend of American Indian, Catholic, and Protestant beliefs and practices. The Indian Shakers are unrelated to the Shakers of New England (United Society of Believers) and are not to be confused with the Native American Church. Most people claim them to be a cult, that is not Christian nor adhering to evangelical beliefs.

Some Nisqually are still part of the Shaker Church. Many, though, are more in name Shaker than in practice. Hence, the majority of Nisqually people live a more secular lifestyle mixed with ethnic practices and supersititions.
