Over 200 people groups live within the borders of Chad. A few people groups include the Fulani, Tubu (or Toubou), Maba, Ouaddai and Zaghawa peoples. Hence, this people group listing is more of a people group cluster.
Around half of Chad’s people live in the more fertile south of the country, where most people are settled. Here, the largest group is the Sara, who make up around a third of the population. Other groups in the centre or south of the country include the Massa, Barma, Buduma and Kotoko.
Few Chadian people have sought opportunities in North America even though their nation have been challenged with extreme poverty, drought and unpredictable weather: all instilling food insecurity, spread malnutrition, and stunted growth in children.
Islam is widely practiced among these groups. However, it is not uncommon for many to practice animistic beliefs. Moreover, many are Sufi Muslims. Sufism is a movement within the Islamic faith where followers try to achieve a deeper understanding of the Divine beyond normal human experience.
The first Chadian immigrants settled in New York and Washington, DC metro areas. The Chadian Community of New Jersey, Inc, opened in 2011 and is located in Jersey City. Another group, the Mid-Atlantic Chadian Communities of America, is located in Washington, DC and aspires to share and celebrate traditional Chadian culture and heritage.
Pray for the health of the people; there are many different problems: diseases brought by excessive hot weather and population.
Pray that God will work miracles in the lives of the Chadian people so they might receive the one true God.
