Brief Profile

The Chickasaw people are a federally recognized as the Chickasaw Nation with the majority residing in Oklahoma. The Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma is the 13th largest federally recognized tribe in the United States. Chickasaw society traditionally was based upon matrilineal descent, which means children were considered to be part of the mother's clan. They valued storytelling as an important way to pass down traditions and legends from one generation to the next.

English is spoken by most Chickasaw people, however preservation of the language is very important to the Chickasaw.

Chickasaw operate the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, Oklahoma. It includes the Chikasha Inchokka’ Traditional Village, Honor Garden, Sky and Water pavilion, and several in-depth exhibits about their diverse culture.

Chickasaw are very religious, and rely on faith for healing. They worship the deity Ababinili, also called Inki Abu (Father Above) under Christian influence. This god represents the things above such as the sun, clouds, and sky.

In addition, worship of other deities was incorporated into the religion. Each god or deity has a different purpose. For example, some deities protect against wicked spirits and evil forces.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that God would work in the hearts and minds of Chickasaw to avoid vices in life that lead a dead-end and lack of fulfillment in life.
  • Pray evangelical Chickasaw will boldly share the message of true freedom and hope in Jesus Christ with Chickasaw, other Native American Indians, and beyond.
