Throughout its history, Salt Lake City has primarily been a predominately white city. More recently the demographics of the city have begun to change. It is estimated that by 2040, immigrants could make up over one-third of the cities population. The largest ethnic group is Hispanic, which takes up approximately 25% of the total population. The largest of the Hispanic people groups are the Mexican people, who are also the largest people group in the state. The Asian and Pacific Island populations have also grown significantly over the past couple of decades. The Asian population has almost doubled over the last fifteen years.
