Profile

Throughout its history, Salt Lake City has primarily been a predominately white city. More recently the demographics of the city have begun to change. With large waves of immigrants and refugees coming into the city over the last several decades, the city has become one of the most diverse cities in the state.

It is estimated that by 2040, immigrants could make up over one-third of the cities population. The largest ethnic group is Hispanic, which takes up approximately 25% of the total population. Many of these Latino immigrants have moved to Salt Lake City because of the abundance of jobs, and affordable cost of living. The largest of the Hispanic people groups are the Mexican people, who are also the largest people group in the state. The Asian and Pacific Island populations have also grown significantly over the past couple of decades. The Asian population has almost doubled over the last fifteen years.
