Brief Profile

A people with a long history of migration, the Hakka Chinese in the United States, come from several countries: including Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and several other countries. The Chinese characters for Hakka literally mean "guest families".

Several large metro areas are the home to Hakka associations that reinforce Hakka unique social, cultural, and linguistic identity. The New England Hakka Association reminds its members to not forget their roots. Another association is the Hakka Association of New York, which aims to promote Hakka culture across five boroughs in New York City. The Hakka Association of Greater Washington, DC reinforces the Hakka of Washington unique identity. San Francisco is home to the Hakka Benevolent Association in San Francisco that has strong ties with the community and offers scholarships to their young members.

The Hakka Chinese follow traditional Chinese religion: a mixed religion of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and ancestral veneration.

Prayer Points
