Brief Profile

The Ivorian are a cluster of people groups from Côte d'Ivoire, formerly known as the Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast is home to over 60 distinct people groups. In the early 2000s, Civil War led many Ivorians to flee their homeland. They settled mostly in larger urban metro areas and predominantly on the east coast in the United States.

French is the national language therefore all Ivorian people speak French. However, they also speak their distinct people group language. They may speak Bambara or Mande languages.

Music is an integral part of Ivorian culture and traditionally griots, or story-tellers, would make a musical accompaniment to their entertainment, with instruments such as drums or gongs.

Ivorian people adhere to either Islam, Christianity, or traditional ethnic religion. In everyday life, they may mix their traditional ethnic religion with either Islamic or Christian practices.

Prayer Points

  • Pray as Christians encounter Ivorian people that they will take time to get to know them, asking questions to understand their ethnic, linguistic, and religious background.
  • Pray God will breakdown social and cultural barriers that prevent Ivorian people from understanding truth found in Jesus Christ.
