Brief Profile

Lithuanian people have a long history of migration to North America migrating primarily for economic reasons or seeking to escape to Communism.

The first wave, in the 1700-1800s, of migrants have all assimilated as is the case of those who migrated in the 1940s to escape the Nazi atrocities of World War II.

The third wave, began in the 1990 after the separation from the former Soviet Union. This third wave fostered a new generation of passing on Lithuanian identity via their cultural traditions and language.

The Chicago metro area is home to the largest population of Lithuanians in the United States and is home to the second largest population in the world. Lithuanian Days in Pennsylvania is the longest running ethnic festival in the United States.

In the United States, the Lithuanian American Community seeks to preserve Lithuanian ethnic and cultural identity.

In Canada, the Lithuanian Canadian Community is the largest Lithuanian Canadian association in Canada and has at least 17 chapters throughout Canada.

Almost all Lithuanians claim Roman Catholicism as their religious preference, if for no other reason than out of tradition of their parents being Roman Catholic. Many have reverted to the indigenous Lithuanian religion.
