Niuean people originated from Niue, an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. The island nation state presently comprises a population of a little over 1,000 people. Howeover, that has not always been the case. Since the 1960's, Niueans have migrated to other countries with the highest diaspora population residing in New Zealand (over 24,000).

Niuean is a Polynesian language, belonging to the Malayo-Polynesian subgroup of the Austronesian languages. It is most closely related to Tongan and slightly more distantly to other Polynesian languages such as Maori, Samoan, and Hawaiian.

An overwhelming majority of Niuean adhere to Christianity, being either Protestant, Congregational Christian Church of Niue, Seventh-day Adventist, Presbyterian, or Methodist. A minority claim Mormonism or Roman Catholicism.
