Brief Profile

Salvadorans are a people of Hispanic origin. Some of the first Salvadorans to come to the USA in large numbers moved during the midst of the country’s civil war, when 20-30% of the population fled. The number of Salvadoran immigrants continued to grow in the 1990s and 2000s as a result of family reunification and new arrivals fleeing a series of natural disasters that hit El Salvador, including Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and earthquakes in 2001. Many continue to immigrate due to rampant violence and gang activity.

Salvadorans are more likely to work than most foreign-born immigrants, with many working in the construction, transportation, and service industries. The primary religion practiced by the El Salvadoran is a form of religion with roots in Christianity, but not theologically Christian. They need to see that salvation comes not from fleeing the violence of their country named after the Savior, but in relationship with the one true Savior. Most only have limited proficiency in English and have little formal education. They need help with ESL, legal, and medical services.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for God to raise up believers from within the Salvadoran community who can be mobilized and trained to take the gospel to the Unreached Unengaged Peoples living all around them.
  • Pray for the family members who fear for the lives of those still in El Salvador to find and share the perfect peace of Jesus Christ.
  • Pray for Salvadoran Christians to become firmly rooted in the Word of God
