Brief Profile

The Mabaan people, literal meaning in their language a "people of home", originated from the Upper Nile Province of South Sudan. They look and speak like their neighbors, the Dinkas, Nuers and Shilluks, but they differ in blood groups and are socially and culturally different from their neighbors.

Traditionally, they are known for being a quiet people who eat a low-cholesterol diet and almost no red meat with a very low incidence of hearing loss. In fact, it is alleged that at the age of 70 they can hear a twig snap from a distance of 100 yards.

However, their traditional cultural dances held during festivals and on special occasions are quite festive. During such occasions, they dance to music.

Religiously, the majority of Mabaan are Christians.

Please note: The Sudanese people group cluster, numbering over 100,000, includes the Acholi, Anuak, Azande, Bari, Central Dinka, Jur Modo, Kaliko, Mabaan, Madi, Moru, Nuer, Shilluk, plus several other minority people groups. They are socially, culturally, linguistically, and religiously diverse with each having their own unique people group identity.
