Brief Profile

The Aceh people migrated to the United States from Indonesia, more specifically from the northernmost tip of the island of Sumatra. Historically, their provincial capital of Banda Aceh was a stopover for Southeast Asian Muslims traveling by ship to Mecca. For this reason the city is sometimes known as "The Veranda of Mecca".

They are the majority ethnic group in the province of Aceh. Known throughout Indonesia as devout followers of Islam, they are very proud of their Muslim faith. Their lives are strongly influenced by Islamic law and Aceh province even has special autonomy to apply Islamic law instead of Indonesian national law in certain cases.

The Aceh speak their own language and most also speak the Indonesian national language.

The Aceh people in the United States have formed their own association, seeking to retain their unique Acehnese social identity.

Prayer Points

  • Pray God will work in the hearts and minds via dreams and other means of the Aceh people to reveal that the ultimate creator God became an intimate personal Savior revealed in Jesus Christ.
  • Pray Christians will naturally encounter Aceh people revealing God's love in both word and deed.
