Buffalo-Cheektowaga-Niagara Falls, NY

The Buffalo-Cheektowaga-Niagara Falls MSA is a two country metropolitan area located in west New York. It has Buffalo, often times referred to as The Nickel City, as its anchoring city.

The population of the greater Buffalo area has been on the decline of the past several years, and one of the major reasons for this is the drop in population of Buffalo city proper. On the other hand the suburbs have kept a steady population over that time. One of the primary reasons for this is the steady flow of immigrants into the suburbs. Recently, Buffalo was ranked as one of the best places to raise a family, and this has brought many immigrant families to the area. Estimates have the foreign-born population growing at a steady pace on into the future.

Profile

The greater Buffalo area has a predominately European immigrant population. With deep Polish, Greek, Italian, and Serbian roots, the city continues to see immigrants from those countries settle within its county lines. These immigrants have had a significant effect on the socioeconomic makeup of Buffalo and will continue to do so as more immigrants settle in the city.

There are several European ethnic enclaves located in and around the city of Buffalo, and much of the culture in the city can be traced back to its European immigrant roots. The area has also seen a significant increase in African immigrants as well. The African population has more than tripled in the past two decades, with a large influx of immigrants from Yemen totaling over 1,500 people.
