Brief Profile

Brazilians are immigrants from the large, vibrant South American country of Brazil. Brazilians may have come from the vast expanse of the North, with its limited economic and educational opportunities, the huge urban centers of central and Southeastern Brazil such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, or the ranching culture of the Gauchos in the deep South.

Brazilians are known for their openness and friendliness. They have a deep and abiding love for soccer, samba music and dance, and for the food of Brazil, such as black beans and rice, cheese bread bites, and shots of hot, sweet expresso coffee. Brazilian steak restaurants, called Churrascarias, are springing up in metro areas around the North America and feature a wide variety of meats grilled over open fire pits and carved off of skewers directly onto the plates of the patrons. Brazilians speak Brazilian Portuguese, although many immigrants speak fairly good English.

While the majority of Brazilians identify as Roman Catholic, this is frequently more of a cultural designation than a well-understood and practiced set of beliefs. Many Brazilians also practice Afro-Brazilian spiritism in conjunction with Catholicism. A strong and growing Evangelical and Pentecostal movement has also flourished among Brazilians in recent years.
