Brief Profile

North America has a rich German heritage. The achievements and contributions of Germans in North America have had a profound effect on making North America as it is today.

Although many people of German ancestral background have assimilated into mainstream North America, a remnant of people who adhere to German culture and language still exists in North America.

On the whole, the use of the German language has declined dramatically, but certain German religious groups practice language maintenance and continue to use German in everyday communication, using English as a second language.

A large majority of German people are Roman Catholic or Lutheran. German evangelical presence is not strong.
